A trip to Hawaii in the middle of trial and other sleep deprivation stories.

We finish the first week of the jury trial which is really the third week. The actual first week Darcy and Mo argue trial motions. The actual second week we select the jury. Now we have completed testimony Monday through Thursday (the judge handles criminal calendar on Friday).

As soon as the judge dismisses us for the day and the jury has dispersed, grab backpack and run to the restroom. Take off court clothes. Put on leggings, long t and hoodie. Jam the rest back into the backpack. Run back to courtroom. Give pack to Mo to drop at office. Grab suitcase and carryon which he picked up at my house on the way to court. Since he drove. And I walked. Say goodbye to everyone. Run out the door. Elevator down. Hail uber.

Get to airport. Delay of an hour and a half. Arrive in Maui at 11pm. Arrive at my house 11:30. Thankfully Caleb who cares for the place, has picked up the bugs. Turn on AC since it is 88 in there. By time climb into bed it is 1:00 am. Belatedly realize that means it is 4 am. But we are not changing time zones so put that out of mind.

Wake up at 4:30. Check out landscaping which is lush due to much needed rain. Look at progress of rock wall along the back. Work on trial. 7:30 am get on zoom. Summary Judgment hearing on another case before Judge Hecklinger who like very much. Against Rory Leid who detest. Win the motion because the judge read and researched everything and came up with an even better analysis than we did.

8:30am Friday Drive to Napili to look at resort property. 10:00 drive back to house. Lock up. Hail uber. Airport. Land in Honolulu 4:30pm. Due to earlier water on the road takes 1.25 hours to get to hotel instead of 20 min. Meanwhile Ph invites me to dinner which I would have gone to if it had not started at 10pm. Which (not that I’m supposed to think of the real time) would be 1 am.

Saturday day work on trial. Walk to meet Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Norm at Dim Sum. And now it is Sunday.

Do stuff. Get late check out at 2. Wait in lobby for an hour. Uber to U of H law school - true reason for coming to Hawaii in the middle of trial. Meet Ph. Who is in her graduation gown with her beatific smile - lais and cords draped around her neck. Store suitcase in student room. She gives me the code.

Ceremony starts at 4:45 which means 5. Must be back to the airport by 7. Cannot stay for her party. Watch her walk down the aisle. Heart full of pride and happiness . Clock is ticking. Walk back to student room. Retrieve items. Uber. Airport. Red eye. New airplane with lie flat thank heavens. Try to sleep and kind of do. Arrive back at 5:30am. Home by 6.

Proud of self for sleeping 4 hours at least. Look at watch which says slept for 2 hours 40 min. Put on court clothes. Leave by 8:15am. Walk and arrive at 9:20. Put on second plaintiff and lay witness. We rest. Defense rests. Walk home with Mo. Do stuff. Around 11pm conk out.

Tuesday wake up 6:30. Watch says slept 6 hours. Am very pleased. Do stuff while Darcy with Mo’s input briefs.

Wednesday do minor settlement hearing with Scott in front of a commissioner who shows up an hour late. Tune in just before noon to hear Darcy arguing jury instructions.

Meanwhile since 7:00 am have been working in upstairs office on closing and the powerpoint. The complexity and length of which have underestimated. Haul set up down to kitchen at 3. Eat salad. Do not move until 8:00. Watch 35 minute episode of Margot has money troubles. Eat popcorn orange and 2 carmel candies. Return to kitchen. Work until just before 2:00 am.

Thursday get up at 5:45. Return to kitchen. Review PPT one more time. Chat with Kristin who is an hour ahead. Finalize and send it off. Get dressed. Out the door 10 minutes late. Run the first mile and a half to make up time. Walk along beautiful waterfront. Arrive. Listen to the Judge read the instructions. Spend two hours closing until lunch break. Resume another hour of closing after. Listen to Defense. Rebuttal. Walk home with Mo. Admit to being groggy.

Stop at house for quick change. Get in car and we drive to our firm attorney dinner which started at 5. Arrive at Canlis. Valet takes over. Check in. We are at the wrong restaurant. Go back out. Get car. Drive to right restaurant. Arrive an hour late. Socialize. Eat delicious meal. Leave before the other diners. Drop him back at office where his truck is. Drive home. Talk to L and play our typical game of backgammon. Watch another episode. Conk out.

Friday work. Walk with L to meet 14 friends and family to watch Mandalorian and Grogu in 3D at Cinerama. Excellent. Fun. Walk home. L sweeps me in backgammon. Don’t sleep soundly. Now it is Saturday.
